Ive been having problems with Opera for a while. Whenever I would load a new page or zoom an existing page, basicaly render a page, Opera would hang my system for a few seconds. I tried everything, carious versions of Opera, recompiling QT with various options and versions, clearing and resizing various caches. To no avail. Then somone told me to try not loading the freetype module when I started X. I commented the Load "freetype" line and voila! Opera works fine! :D |

Decided to go back to Debian after using 29 hours to compile OpenOffice just to have it chrash when I started it.
But omg. Debian proved WERY unwilling to work on my machine. Things that had worked perfectly in the past suddenly refused to work. After much toiling I managed to push it, kicking and screaming, onto my HD and boot okish. I still get some appraently random lockups and my onboard soundcar, wich worked perfectly in Debian before and also in Gentoo, just doesnt want to work, bad sound out put no matter how or with what I compile the alsa module. Now using my other Creative pci soundcard with the ens1371 module and trying to find a solution to the lockup problem. |

Anyway.
Nvidia graphic drivers require MTRR (memory type range register or something) support enabeled in the kernel to install properly and for the glx module to load.
The ebuild for the Industrial gtk theme is called ximian-artworks
The console colordepth and resolution problem has been looked at. I found that I will leave it as it is for now. |

Gentoo is working and im getting a hand of it!
Now, here is yet another to do list!
1. Bash promt needs tuning. I got the syntax right, but the colors are to bright.
2. That console resolution and colordepth.
3. CUPS
4. Locate and install the "industrial" gtk/gtk2 theme.
5. Mozilla-thunderbird |

| | Bach - Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 G-dur BWV. 1049 Mov. 1 | ] | OK! HAPPY! Got QT working! After reading some fposts from other people having trouble with QT I did the following: "emerge opengl" (Recompiled X. This took a wery long time), "emerge autoconf" (This apparently just reinstalled the same version of autoconf as I already had installed on my system) "emerge unmerge qt" (removed the nonworking qt) and then finnaly I did "emerge qt" to reinstall QT. Then it worked. I dont know wich or how any of these things fixed it, but to be frank, I dont care! Its working now! :D
Now for my next project. Gtk themes. |

| | Beethoven - String Quartet C sharp-major Op. 131 Mov. 7 | ] | Ok! Found the source of my compilation errors! But not untill after I decided to reinstall Debian to see if that fixed the problem. After batteling with that wreched Debian Installer for the better part of 24 hours (Was made extra hard by tha fact that the installer did not contain a module to power the nForce nic) I decided to give Gentoo another shot. I managed to get past my the point where I gave up the last time and startet compiling the bootstrap system.
After about 20 minutes the compiler exited with the same horrific errors as I got in Debian!! I was starting to get desperate because I started to belive this was a hardware error and I really couldnt afford any more expensive hardware this month.
But then I remembered that these problems started when I overclocked my ram! DUH! Silly me! Of course it was the ram! Segmentation Fault FFS!! So I turned the ram back to its origianl settings and started over again. This time it went smooth!
So now Im running Gentoo Linux 1.4 on Reiserfs and so far it looks good! Acutaly it looks wery good! I am still considering if using all that time compiling everything (X took about an hour and QT takes two hours) is worth the increased speed, but I hope that as the system evolves there will be less and less dependencies to compile, thus reducing the compile time for each application.
This portage things i really quite intereseting. As far as I can understand it its just a collection of source packages wrapped in files wich contains info about dependencies and scripts on how to configure and build each package! Simple and briliant!
Maybe il return to Debian some day, but now, by the look of things, il be staying with Gentoo.
A few problems remains to be solved in Gentoo:
1. GTK themes (Yes, again) 2. QT (emergeing it didnt work, compiling it from source downloaded from trolltech.com wich some extra configuring options as I write) 3. Direct frambuffer. I want a higher resolution and color depth on bootscren and console. 4. Im not sure modules behave in the same way as they did in Debian. Il have to look into it. |
